Val Noone and Mary Doyle invite you to a centenary commemoration of Archbishop Daniel Mannix’s first speech against conscription:
Dr Mannix: “Clifton Hill, where I committed my original sin”
6.00 for 6.30 pm Friday 16 September 2016
Aikenhead Hall, St John’s Parish Corner Queens Parade and Wellington Street, Clifton Hill
On a wet and stormy night, 16 September 1916, during World War I, a fortnight after Prime Minister William Hughes announced the first conscription referendum, Archbishop Daniel Mannix delayed his expected arrival at another function to go briefly to join a large crowd at the St John’s parish bazaar in Clifton Hill. He opened the bazaar with a couple of sentences and then spoke for some seven minutes on “an issue occupying them all at the present time”, namely the proposals by the Hughes government for compulsory overseas military service.
- To mark the centenary of this event, you are invited to a gathering in the hall (a newer hall) of St John’s parish, Clifton Hill, featuring a recital of the speech and discussion of its implications.
