Grew up in Warrnambool, Vic.; Started work at Fitzgerald’s drapers at age 12; Worked digging potatoes, road making and in a milk factory; Apprenticeship in boilermaking in 1883-1890; Worked at Newport Workshops; Joined a debating society and met Judge Williams and JJ Liston; Joined Boilermakers’ Union, c.1890; Member, District Committee of union for 46 years; Sec. Boilermakers’ Union, c.1913-1947 (retired); Pres. Federal Council of Boilermakers’ Society for 16 yrs; Sec. Iron Trades Council for many years;
