Arrived Greta coalfield 1891; 1893 involved in industrial dispute which saw defeat of Greta miners’ lodge & victimisation of unionists. Returned with family to Torbanlea; further industrial trouble led family to move to Outtrim, South Gippsland, 1897. Regarded as a radical, he was treasurer of Outtrim lodge at time of Vic. coal strike of 1903; was George Gregory’s mate underground and a defendant in the Gregory Case; Dec. 1903 convicted for assaulting a scab labourer & fined 20s. or 3 days imprisonment; friendly with fellow South Gippsland militants Robert Semple & Arthur Teece and probably also associated with Tom Mann during 1903 strike. After being victimised again in South Gippsland, left for Hunter Valley in May 1904. Secretary of Abermain lodge 1913, holding position for 5 years; member of lodge for over 40 years. Founding member Abermain branch ALP & Kurri Kurri Co-operative store.
