GALLOWAY, James Gilvray (1828- 1860)
B. ?, Springfield, Fifeshire, 1828. D. 7 June 1860, Collingwood
Arrived in Melbourne, 1854. Stonemason; February 1856, present at inaugural meeting of StoneMasons Society and foundation secretary. March 1856, pioneer of 8 Hour Day movement and principal instigator of movement. Blacklisted by employers. Standing as major figure in 8 Hour Day movement downplayed in favour of James Stephens. Died destitute. Following premature death stonemasons erected monument in his honour in Melbourne General Cemetery generally known as ‘8 hours monument’.
